Get to know the safest cars in the country within your budget.
The recent breed of car buyers has become conscious when it comes to their preferences. Earlier features, looks and mileage dominated the checklist, now safety has become a significant trait in the buying process. Automakers used to employ airbags and braking systems to lure buyers in the past but, the focus is now shifting towards strengthening the core structures. The Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) conducts crash tests on different cars and rate them according to their performance in the tests. Besides the structure, it also considers other active and passive safety features.
Let’s have a look at the top 7 safe cars in the country under Rs 15 lakh.
7. Maruti Vitara Brezza
Price: Rs 7.34 – 11.40 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi)
Yeah, surprises in. We have a Maruti Suzuki in the list of safest cars in India. The Vitara Brezza scores 4 out of 5 stars in the Global NCAP rating and is the safest Maruti car in the country. The subcompact SUV scored 4 and 2 in adult and child protection tests, respectively.
The Maruti Suzuki SUV gets a decent list of protective features such as dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, reverse parking camera with sensors, hill hold assist and several more.
6. Tata Tiago/Tigor
Tiago Price: Rs 4.70 – 6.74 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi)
Tigor Price: Rs 5.39 – 7.49 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi)
The two-airbag variants of the Tiago hatchback and Tigor sedan secured 4 stars in the global NCAP crash tests. The homegrown automaker is increasingly focussing on the safety aspects of its cars. And the recent breed including the Tiago and Tigor has been able to make a mark in the GNCAP tests. Both the Tata cars were able to achieve 4 stars in adult protection and 3 starts in child protection categories.
Tiago and Tigor are laced with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, front seatbelt pre-tensioners and more. Considering the price point, Tiago is the most affordable 4-star rated car in the country.
5. Volkswagen Polo
Price: Rs 5.87 – 9.67 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi)
The high-strength structure of the Polo can be gauged from the fact that it managed to score a thumping 4 stars out of 5 in 2014 despite lacking features such as ABS and seat-belt reminders. In key safety features, it only had dual airbags. We are considering the 2014 results as the Polo hasn’t changed in all these years and its design doesn’t look outdated either, right?
If tested with the ABS and seat-belt reminders of today’s model, it would definitely score 5 out of 5. The 2014 VW Polo managed 4 stars in adult protection and 3 stars in child protection. Interestingly, it didn’t have ISOFIX child tethers as well in the past.
4. Mahindra Marazzo
Price: Rs 11.25 -13.59 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi)
The shark-inspired MPV from Mahindra, the Marazzo scored 4 stars out of 5 in the GNCAP tests. The 2018 model secured 2 stars in the child protection category. It is available in two seating options – 7-seat and 8-seat.
The standard safety features of the Mahindra Marazzo include ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution), dual front airbags, and ISOFIX child seat anchors. Its rival Maruti Suzuki Ertiga secured 3 stars for adult protection, which is one star short of the Marazzo.
3. Tata Nexon
Price: Rs 6.99 – 12.70 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi)
Even without seatbelt reminder for front occupants, the Nexon scored 4 stars in the crash tests. The sub-4m SUV added these features along with more safety tweaks and went again for the tests. This time it scored 5 out of 5 and became the country’s first car to score full marks. It got 16.06/17. For child protection, it got 3 stars. Another catch here is that the tested Nexon is the pre-facelift model of 2018.
The 2020 Nexon comes with more safety features which will comply with the upcoming pedestrian protection norms in India. The standard protective features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, electronic stability program (ESP) and ISOFIX child seat anchorages.
2. Tata Altroz
Price: Rs 5.44 – 8.95 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi)
Yet another Tata in the list of safe cars. The Altroz managed to beat its competitors with its robust tough build thanks to the ALFA-Arc platform. The premium hatchback is rated as the safest car in the affordable hatchback category in India. While the adult protection ratings were 5 for the Altroz, it only managed to score 3 in the child category. It got 16.13/17, which takes it to the number 2 spot in this list.
The Altroz gets a good dose of standard protective equipment such as dual airbags, ABS with EBD, seat-belt reminders for front seats, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX child seat mounts. In safety, it’s ahead of its rivals such as Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai i20.
1. Mahindra XUV300
Price: Rs 7.94 – 12.29 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi)
Topping the Global NCAP crash tests in India is the Mahindra XUV300. It gets the first-ever award for the Safer Choice award by GNCAP. It scored 5 out of 5 stars for adult protection and 4 out of 5 for child protection. Among the Nexon, Altroz and XUV300, the XUV scored 16.42/17 earning it the top spot.
The standard safety kit offered in the Mahindra SUV includes mandatory dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, rear disc brakes, seat-belt reminders and rear parking sensors. The variant tested was the base variant. The higher trims of the XUV300 come with 7 airbags, ESP, tyre pressure monitoring system and several others making it further safe.
