Global markets will see the world’s first MG One SUV debuting on July 30, 2021. According to the company, the MG One is built on a new modular platform that will enhance its design and technological capabilities.
According to MG, the One SUV has a sporty design philosophy, which is apparent in the preview images. The front of the vehicle is dominated by a low-set, wide grille flanked by sharp-looking headlamps, prominent creases on the bonnet, and an L-shaped front bumper. The roof of the SUV tapers downwards as it travels toward the rear, giving the SUV a coupe-like appearance from the sides. In addition to prominent haunches, cladding in the wheel arches, lower doors, and sporty dual-tone wheels, the vehicle is designed to be visually appealing. A spoiler mounted on the roof and sleek taillights with LED elements are also visible on the back of the car.
There have been a lot of details released by MG about the upcoming global SUV, including the fact that it will be based on the new SIGMA modular architecture. A possible application of the architecture in a multitude of products is hinted by the name ‘all-in-one’ architecture. MG also revealed that the SUV will include “advanced electric architecture”, an “active digital ecosystem,” and “hardcore software technology” – which suggests the SUV could be fully loaded with the latest tech features, from semi-autonomous to infotainment.
The MG One is an SUV that will likely be of the same size as the upcoming Indian version called the Astor. The powertrain option will be a 1.5-litre turbo petrol motor from the Hector. This engine might be offered with a 180hp tune and with manual as well as automatic transmissions. It is likely that the Astor might also come with this same engine option. For the Indian market we might get a diesel also though a smaller one is something that MG India doesn’t currently have in its portfolio.
In reality, the Astor, if indeed that is its name, will be a direct competitor to both Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The car is based on a modified ZS platform and although the electric version has been widely praised, the petrol version could also receive favourable reviews. The launch date and other details of Astor’s launch are unknown, as MG India has yet to announce.
MG India’s next product launch is expected to be the petrol variant of the ZS EV. This new SUV (which will be the facelifted ZS sold internationally) will feature updated styling and is expected to take the Astor rebadge, which sets it apart from the ZS EV. There is currently no news on whether the MG One will ship to India or not.
