    The German luxury marquee launched its 2 Series Gran Coupe in the country on October 15 at a price tag of Rs 39.30 lakh (ex-showroom). It is offered in two variants – the base 220d Sport Line and the top-spec 220d M Sport (available at Rs 41.40 lakh).

    With the 2 Series, the premium carmaker looks to tap the luxury enthusiasts at the lower end of the spectrum. Recently, Audi too introduced its smallest Q, the Audi Q2 in the country. So, everyone is out to tap the ‘budding’ premium car buyers. The new kid on the block slots below the present 3 Series in the BMW portfolio and locks horns with the Audi 3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

    1. How big is the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe?

    The smallest four-door from BMW is still quite big compared to regular cars. It is 4526mm longer, 1800mm wider and 1420mm taller. It gets a wheelbase of 2670mm which should result in excellent space inside the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe’s cabin. Compared to its rivals, it is the longest and the widest vehicle. However, the A-Class is the tallest and has the longest wheelbase here.

    For now, BMW has only launched the diesel engine of the 2 Series Gran Coupe. The petrol model would be launched later. Powering the smallest Gran Coupe in India is the 1995cc 4-valve diesel engine which develops maximum power of 190hp at 4,000 rpm along with generating maximum torque of 400Nm at 1,750–2,500 rpm. It gets a standard 8-speed Steptronic sport transmission with the diesel motor. It offers an impressive fuel economy of 18.64kmpl.

    The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is also the quickest in the competition with 0-100kmph figures of 7.5 seconds. The Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class achieve the same acceleration in 8.2 seconds and 8.6 seconds, respectively.

    3. What are the features of the 2 Series Gran Coupe?

    The BMW is offered with an exhaustive list of features which comprise of LED headlamps, LED DRLs, rain sensor and auto headlamps, dual-zone automatic AC, rear AC vents, panoramic sunroof with auto sliding/tilting function, power-adjustable driver & co-passenger seats with memory functions, 40:20:40 split rear seats and many more.

    Under its connected drive tech, the 2 Series gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display and MID display, voice command functions, a virtual assistant (starts with “Hey BMW”), BMW gesture control, parking assist with reversing assistant, rear view camera, wireless charging, 10-speaker system and navigation system with 3D maps.

    4. How safe is the smallest coup?

    The German machines are renowned for being the toughest and the same holds true for the Gran Coupe. It gets 6 airbags, side-impact protection, high-speed alert system, pedestrian protection with the active bonnet, dynamic stability control (DSC) with dynamic traction control and electronic differential lock control (EDLC), ABS with BA, cornering braking control, ISOFIX child anchorages, tyre pressure monitoring system and more.

    It gets attentive assistance which swings into action above 70kmph. It analyzes the driving behavior of the driver and suggests when it’s time to take a break.

    Moreover, the crash sensors activate airbags, hazard light system, interior light, unlock doors, activates safety battery terminal clamp and deactivates fuel supply line in the event of a crash.
