Foxconn Looking at Making EVs in India, Unveils 3 New Prototypes

  • Taiwan’s tech company Foxconn announced its entry into the automotive industry on Monday with the unveiling of 3 new electric vehicle prototypes
  • Models C, E and T- SUV, sedan and a bus respectively
  • Launch of Model C expected by 2023

In a joint venture with Yulon Motor Co. Ltd, a Taiwanese carmaker, the tech giant is looking to launch electric vehicles in the auto markets of India, Europe and Latin America. Formerly known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, Foxconn aims to provide components or services to 10 per cent of the world’s EVs by 2027.

At its HHTD21 event, Foxconn revealed prototypes of a sedan, an SUV and a bus, all-electric models. Further, these vehicles are developed under the brand name Foxtron in collaboration with Yulon. Yulon has its own brand Luxgen to manufacture vehicles for Nissan and Mitsubishi in Taiwan.

Liu, at the same event, said Taiwan had a natural edge when it came to making EVs because of its existing strength in software and semiconductors.

According to India Brand Equity Foundation, India with 3.49 million vehicle sales, was the fifth-largest market for automotive in 2020. It also stands seventh in manufacturing as of 2019. This makes India a worthwhile venture for Foxconn to enter into its proposed global EV plans. Apart from India, Foxconn is also interested in manufacturing in Brazil and Europe.

All 3 EVs are based on MIH consortium, Foxconn’s open software and hardware platform and are essentially design kits that enable EV brands to mass produce vehicles to their own specifications.

Though Model C is only expected to hit the Taiwan markets in 2023, Model T could arrive as early as next year. The new car making tech giants are predicting the EV arm to be of a trillion Taiwanese dollar worth within the next five years. That is almost 25 billion pounds.
