Let’s take a closer look at the design, features and price of the Hyundai i20 and how good of an offering it is for the consumers.

Hyundai i20 has been a popular hatchback for a long time. It is a hatchback that was well-liked among people. Before the Hyundai i20 was launched, streets were ruled by the Hyundai Santro which had already established a name for itself. After the i20 was launched, it promised luxury, a spacious cabin with a large boot and a scintillating driving experience. All these qualities carried over to the newer generations of the i20.

With the latest version of the i20, Hyundai aims to undercut its rivals, namely, Maruti Baleno, Toyota Glanza and Tata Altroz. Hyundai i20 got a significant change streamlining it with the new design language of the Hyundai family. Let’s take a comprehensive look and find out whether it still has the charm or not.

Exterior Design

Hyundai i20

Hyundai i20 has been a sporty-looking hatchback from the beginning. The latest version of the i20 carries a sporty look with a modern appeal. The front looks sharp with cuts and creases on the bumper, along with the LED projectors and DRLs. Foglamp housing looks unique and is surrounded by chrome. The contoured bonnet tapers down to the bumper enhancing the sharp design. Hyundai’s signature grille looks the part and gives the vehicle a sporty appeal.

The side has a lot going on, similar to the front design. There are various character lines with sharp cuts and creases enhancing the look. A prominent shoulder line runs to the rear, along with a shadow line at the bottom. The 16-inch diamond-cut alloys look futuristic and modern, complementing the overall side profile.

i20 Rear

Coming to the rear, things become a bit unorthodox. The Z-shaped LED taillights look distinctive to say the least. The sharp cuts and creases carry to the rear as well. The vehicle looks a bit overdone at the rear with a lot of design elements concentrated in a single area. Overall, the i20 looks sporty, striking and modern and has a distinctive design. You would not mistake this car for any other.

Interior and Features

Hyundai has always been consistent with its interior aspect and the i20 is no different. The design is modern and fluid with an all-new dashboard design. It features an all-black cabin and there are horizontal slats running across the dashboard which enhance the appeal of the car, along with the floating controls for the automatic climate control. The plastic quality is decent inside the car with hard plastics being used everywhere, although, fit and finish levels are good. There is a 10.25-inch touchscreen which is tilted a bit towards the driver and comes with a floating design as well. The seats are nice and comfortable with ample cushioning, along with lumbar support. The instrument cluster is a digital unit with crisp resolution and is similar to the one on the Hyundai Verna.

i20 Interior

Hyundai has generously equipped the i20 with a lot of kits. It gets all the bells and whistles and the equipment list might exceed the expectations, considering this car is a hatchback. The list includes air quality control, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, push-button start, keyless entry, cruise control, 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cooled glovebox, voice commands, sunroof, wireless charging pad, rear parking sensors with camera, leather seats with leather-wrapped steering and gear selector, connected car tech and 7-speaker premium Bose sound system. Overall, the interior of the i20 is loaded with technology and a great place to spend time in.

Performance and Ride Quality

Hyundai i20 shares its powertrain with the Hyundai Venue and comes with three engine options, two petrol units and a diesel. The first is a 1.2-litre petrol engine which produces 83 bhp and 114 Nm of torque, second is a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine which dishes out 120 bhp and 172 Nm of torque and last but not the least, a 1.5-litre diesel engine which churns out 100 bhp and 240 Nm of torque.

All of these engine options are supremely capable. The most fun-to-drive engine would be the turbo petrol but it will take a hit on the economic aspect. The naturally aspirated motor produces respectable figures but seems a bit dull when compared with the other options on offer. If you are looking for a mixture between driving dynamics and economy, diesel should be the pick of the bunch. It has sufficient oomph with a frugal side to it.

Hyundai i20 features an all-black interior and despite that, the cabin feels roomy and spacious. There is enough kneeroom and headroom but, due to the low seating position, under-thigh support might be a problem. Rear AC vents along with a USB port, go a long way in aiding comfort at the rear. There is a suppleness in the suspension setup of the i20. It feels solid out on the highway and has a matured ride in the city. There is some feedback from the steering but still feels a bit numb. The ride quality is well-balanced and can take anything in its stride with relative ease. Overall, the i20 scores well in the performance and ride quality department, ticking almost all the boxes.

Safety

Hyundai has used high strength steel for the i20, making it a safer car than before. The safety kit includes cruise control, ABS with EBD, six airbags, child safety locks, anti-theft alarm, tyre pressure monitoring system, vehicle stability control system, engine immobilizer, crash sensor, automatic headlamps, electronic stability control, reverse camera with parking sensors, hill assist, ISOFIX child seat mounts and anti-pinch driver’s window.
