The intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) will be mated to the 1.0-litre petrol engine of the Venue.
Hyundai Motors, India’s largest passenger car exporter, is set to embrace its Venue sub-compact SUV with the groundbreaking intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) system. The first-in-industry technology is a two-pedal clutch-less gearbox which will be linked to the 1.0-litre direct-injection turbo petrol motor of the Venue. What is intelligent Manual Transmission technology?
It’s a two-pedal clutch-less system which is a fusion of manual and automatic transmissions. Consider the floor of an automatic car where there isn’t a clutch and then the gear of a manual car. The Hyundai Venue laced with iMT tech will appear just like that. In a nutshell, the iMT tech automates ‘the need of pressing the clutch’ while keeping the joy of shifting gears intact.
The South Korean automaker states that it has used an ‘intention sensor’ which presumes when the driver is about to shift gear and sends signal to transmission control unit (TCU). In turn, the TCU alerts the hydraulic actuator to engage and disengage the clutch via concentric slave cylinder (CSC). This eliminates the use of mechanical clutch operation.
The tech promises to retain the fun of manual gear shifts without losing on the convenience of automatic (by being clutch-less). Importantly, the company claims that you can enjoy using iMT tech without losing on the fuel efficiency and performance as well.
The 1.0-litre T-GDI is currently offered in both manual as well as automatic transmissions. In terms of prices, the iMT mated Venue will slot between the two gearboxes. The Hyundai Venue is priced in the range of Rs 6.70 lakh – Rs 11.50 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi). Let’s see if the iMT technology will be able to thrust Venue’s sales further.
