Let’s find out what impact the upcoming Grand Cherokee SUV is likely to make in India when it arrives in 2022 in a new avatar.
Jeep has been a prominent name globally and people have been trusting the brand name for a very long time. Some years ago, Jeep made its entry into the Indian car industry with the launch of the Compass which was a great product. People loved the styling and the attractive pricing took the market by storm. The Jeep Grand Cherokee was launched after the Compass but it was not as popular and people preferred the Compass.
Grand Cherokee has been around for decades globally and has proven to be reliable and a great choice for people who have bigger families and want a capable SUV. This update is vital for Jeep to make a re-launch of the Grand Cherokee in the Indian market.
Jeep is famous for a macho and bold styling on all of their cars. The Grand Cherokee has been no different and this time around, it looks modern along with the bold elements while staying true to the Jeep family design language. Up front, you get the 7-slat grille with chrome surrounds, new LED headlights and LED fog lights. The bumper looks sharp and the bonnet has a contour line which fades away giving the car some character.
From the sides, there is a prominent shoulder line running all the way to the rear. The body line makes the car look muscular and portrays immense road presence. The standard 18-inch diamond cut wheels looks sophisticated and complement the look of the car overall.
The rear looks muscular as well with a hint of futuristic appeal. The LED taillights give a modern touch and the car gets functional twin exhausts with chrome tips giving the car a sporty feel. Overall, the design of the Grand Cherokee stays true to the Jeep design language and looks muscular and modern providing it with immense road presence.
Interior and Features
The interior on the Grand Cherokee goes hand in hand with the futuristic appeal of the car on the exterior. The Grand Cherokee has a very welcoming interior with some high-quality stitching across the dashboard along with the door panels and a nice wooden trim on the middle part of the dashboard. Although, there are some hard plastics lower down but the cabin exudes luxury and plushness and is solidly built. The buttons have a tactile feel to them and have chrome surrounds along with some other minor detailing. A special mention for the front seats which are supremely comfortable and has multiple adjustments. The interior is cohesive and the cabin overall, has a modern and luxurious appeal to it.
Talking about the rear seats, the 6-seater version comes with captain chairs and is the one which would be the most comfortable. There is ample amount of space in the second row with separate climate controls and two type C ports and two USB ports. It has generous cushioning but the arm rests are a bit puny. The third row is a practical place to be in and can house two adults for a short journey in considerable comfort.
Jeep has been generous while equipping the Grand Cherokee with tech. Starting off, it gets two 10-inch displays inside the cabin which have all the information you need to know about the car. The front seats have a massage function, are ventilated and heated and have memory functions too, while the rear seats are heated only. It gets a heated steering wheel too but won’t be useful for the Indian market. The Grand Cherokee comes with a wireless charging pad along with two type C ports and two USB ports for added practicality.
The infotainment display has a crisp resolution and offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also gets a panoramic sunroof along with a digital rear view mirror which works pretty well and there is a quad zone climate control on offer. It gets a 10-inch display for instrument cluster which houses the navigation as well with crisp fonts. Overall, the interior of the Grand Cherokee is plush and oozing with technology.
Performance and Ride Quality
The global version of the Grand Cherokee comes with two engine options, a 5.7-litre V8 producing 357 bhp of peak power and 528 Nm of peak torque and a V6 producing 293 bhp of peak power and 352 Nm of peak torque. Looking at the numbers, both the engines will do a terrific job with no complaints in the power department. However, the Indian spec version would be getting different engine displacements best suited for Indian conditions and driving habits.
The Grand Cherokee gets air suspension and active dampers on the suspension to make the ride quality best suited for the different driving modes on offer. The ride is planted and comfortable and can be tweaked by changing driving modes. The handling department did a great job too. The steering feels good to hold and has accurate feel and feedback.
Overall, the global version has capable engines and a smooth ride quality making it a desirable option for a person who wants to buy a luxury SUV for their family.
The global version of the Grand Cherokee is an enticing option and is better than most of its rivals in many aspects. However, the upcoming Indian spec version will have changes in the feature list and the driving department. With an expected price in the range of Rs 75-95 lakh (Ex-showroom), the Grand Cherokee is an expensive family SUV and will be going against the likes of the Volvo XC90, Audi Q7, Mercedes GLE and BMW X5. It remains to be seen whether the Grand Cherokee would make a dent in this segment upon its arrival or not.
