The Bolero has been around for quite a long time now and appealed to the people with its rugged styling and go-anywhere attitude. Starting with the elder sibling, the Mahindra Bolero still retains the rugged stance portraying immense road presence. The front looks bold and purposeful with large halogen headlights and a big bumper. The 15-inch steel rims could’ve been bigger to suit the flared-out wheel arches.
It has a distinctive shoulder line stretching all the way to the rear. The rear is unchanged with the signature spare wheel on the tailgate with the Bolero branding. Overall, the design is raw and rugged which suits the Bolero.
Coming to the new kid, the Mahindra Bolero Neo has a more modern approach in the exterior department. Interior and Features
The Bolero has a dated interior with bare minimum features. The front seats are fairly comfortable and are set high to give a great view complemented by the large window area. The plastic quality is poor but justifies the price tag. It gets a digital instrument cluster with a multi-information display which has a dated font and seriously needs an upgrade. It offers power steering, power windows, 12V charging socket, rear screen washer with wiper, keyless entry, central locking and static bending headlamps. Overall, the interior lacks features and the modern features a vehicle requires.
The interior of the Bolero Neo is much better when compared to its elder sibling. It feels much more modern with a black and beige theme, along with a 7-inch touchscreen sitting in the middle. The plastic quality is considerably better and the cabin feels solidly put together. However, the 7-inch touchscreen is a bit small by modern day standards and misses out on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. It gets an analogue instrument cluster with a digital multi-information display but still looks much better than the one on the Bolero.
It offers steering mounted controls, electrically adjustable ORVMs, tilt adjustment for the steering, keyless entry, height-adjustable driver seat, follow me home headlamps, voice messaging system and static bending headlamps. Overall, the Mahindra Bolero Neo has a better interior ambience and a well-built interior with modern elements which make it edge ahead.
Performance and Ride Quality
Starting off with the Bolero, it comes with a 1.5-litre; 3-cylinder diesel motor which produces 75 bhp and 210 nm of torque which is sent to the rear wheels. The performance is adequate from the engine for city as well as highway duties, however, it might feel a bit dull with the vehicle fully loaded. It is a capable off-roader thanks to its high ground clearance. It can tackle any condition which you might face in your day-to-day life but it might not be prepared for rigorous off-roading.
Coming to the rear seats, the second row has adequate space for three adults, although, taller passengers might have an issue with knee room. The last row is best suited for kids or using it as luggage space. The ride quality is on the stiffer side and there is body-roll too. It performs well over bad patches of road with only the sharper bumps filtering inside the cabin.
The Bolero Neo comes with a 1.5-litre diesel engine which makes 100 bhp and 260nm of torque. The performance is good with some amount of turbo lag, but is adequate for city as well as highway driving. Even with the vehicle being fully loaded, the performance would feel ample and with the added flexibility of ECO mode, it will improve the mileage too. It is more of a road car but can tackle occasional off-roading with ease.
The rear seats on the Bolero Neo have the same amount of space and is suitable for three adults. Under thigh support is lacking and knee room could be an issue for taller passengers. The third row is suitable for kids or for carrying luggage. The ride quality feels plusher and body-roll is well contained. It gobbles up bad patches of roads fairly easily, giving a composed ride.
The Mahindra Bolero offers very little when it comes to safety, such as, ABS, driver airbag, reverse parking sensors, seatbelt reminder, co-driver occupant detection system and engine immobilizer.
The Mahindra Bolero Neo offers a bit more than the elder sibling, namely, reverse park assist, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, driver and passenger airbag, corner braking control and engine immobilizer.

Both the offerings from Mahindra have a style of their own, with the Bolero retaining the older design language and the Bolero Neo having a modern touch. With prices almost similar, the Bolero Neo would be better option as it is a newer car with a modern interior and offers more features with a higher value for money quotient.
