Let’s take a deep dive and study about the design, features, specs and more details of the Mahindra KUV 100 NXT and know how good of an offering it is for the consumers.
Mahindra has not achieved success yet in the hatchback segment. They have a prominent image in the SUV segment and commercial sector and have been recognized as pioneers when it comes to dishing out quality machines. Mahindra KUV 100 NXT is the key to success in the hatchback segment and to harden their image further.
It is imperative that Mahindra cater to the requirements of the people and develop a product which the people need and want. Mahindra KUV 100 NXT is the facelifted version of the outgoing Mahindra KUV 100. It has been refined further and given some significant changes to make it a more attractive proposition. It remains to be seen whether people are in line with this change or Mahindra has still got some more work to do.
Mahindra KUV 100 NXT has a radical design. Starting from the front, it gets a new grille with a revised bumper. There are several character lines and creases on the face of the car which make it look aggressive. The headlamps are revised as well and have DRLs in them. A skid plate at the lower end of the bumper along with a contoured bonnet, make the KUV 100 NXT look bold and aggressive.
Coming to the sides, it has big wheel arches to accentuate the SUV-like design of the car. It gets 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels that enhance the look of the car, along with black-out wing mirrors with turn indicators in them. There is a bold shoulder line that breaks erratically towards the end and from there, originates a new line. The rear door handle is integrated into the C-pillar, catering to the unconventional design of the car.
Finally, talking about the rear profile, the bold lines continue and the design looks a bit overdone. The bumper gets sharp character lines and the clear-lens taillights look rather good. There is a skid plate at the lower end of the bumper which enhances the overall look and road presence of the car. Overall, the design of the Mahindra KUV 100 NXT is unconventional, SUV inspired and radical.
Interior and Features
The KUV 100 NXT features an all-black interior and the unconventional theme continues on the inside as well. The plastics used inside the cabin are hard and are expected at this price point but all the materials feel solidly put together. However, the positioning of the gear level is unconventional and might take time to get used to. There are some silver and chrome embellishes inside the cabin which increase the plushness. The KUV 100 NXT comes in a 5/6-seater configuration and with the 6-seater version, you get a massive armrest with cupholders if the seat is not being used. The seats are set high-up and have adequate cushioning and support to make travel easier for longer journeys. Mahindra KUV 100 NXT gets a conventional analogue instrument cluster with two dials for the speedometer and tachometer and a multi-information display in the middle.
There are not many features on the KUV 100 NXT as it is a hatchback and is only restricted to features that are necessary and required in this segment. The list includes automatic climate control, accessory power outlet, seat lumbar support, keyless entry, glove box cooling, hands-free tailgate, height adjustable drivers’ seat and 7-inch touchscreen with connected car tech from Mahindra. All of these things when combined, create a seamless experience inside the KUV 100 NXT. However, there are some misses inside the cabin like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with rear AC vents. But, the experience inside the car is pleasant with little complaints.
Performance and Ride Quality
Mahindra KUV 100 NXT comes with a petrol engine only which is a 1.2-litre unit and produces 82 bhp of power and 115 Nm of torque. The power delivery from this motor is linear and it does not feel underpowered at any given point in time. However, Mahindra could have tuned the engine slightly better to improve driving dynamics and refine the engine. It is a capable city car and will complete those occasional highway duties without a hitch. The steering might feel a little dull at lower speeds but weighs up nicely at triple-digit speeds. It is not a very fun car to throw into the corners due to its SUV-like design which might unsettle the car. Considering the economy aspect, it is a bit behind its rivals claiming an ARAI approved figure of 18.15kmpl.
Talking about the backseat, it has ample kneeroom and headroom with adequate under-thigh support. However, the black-out C-pillar for the door handles hinders light from entering inside the cabin and might feel a little claustrophobic. On the plus side, it is a wide enough car to seat three adults in the back in decent comfort but only for journeys in the city. Rear AC vents would have been a nice touch in aiding comfort at the rear. KUV 100 NXT has a soft suspension setup which means that it has a bouncy ride on the highway with a bit of body-roll as well. Although, the soft suspension means that it rounds off bumps and potholes seamlessly with minimal cabin intrusion making the ride quality plush.
Along with Mahindra’s supreme build quality, the KUV 100 NXT also gets several safety features. The list includes ABS with EBD, child safety locks, anti-theft alarm, dual airbags, side and front impact beams, engine immobilizer, crash sensor, rear parking sensors, follow me home headlamps and ISOFIX child seat mounts.
