Mahindra's 5-door Thar to debut in India between 2023-2026 | NewsBytes

The second-generation Mahindra Thar is a huge success for Mahindra and Mahindra, as it commands a waiting period of over a year. The new Thar is available in a 3-door configuration with its ladder-on-frame chassis. Though it targets enthusiasts, many buyers want a more conventional five-door version for practical reasons.

Mahindra has announced plans to develop a 5-door version of the Thar lifestyle SUV to broaden its appeal. Mahindra Thar 5-doors will be based on a modified version of the existing platform. A longer wheelbase will be added, as well as new doors for the rear passengers will be seen. Larger boot space will be offered in the SUV as well.

Mahindra’s 5-door Thar is targeted at buyers looking for a practical SUV with a large boot space and seats for up to five adults, as well as off-road abilities and a rugged look. There is a high probability of the 5-door version being more popular among Indian buyers.

According to Mahindra, the 5-door Thar will be based on the same GEN3 ladder-frame chassis that underpins the 3-door model. Scorpio is also set to be based on this platform when it launches in 2022. There are also plans for a five-door Thar to undergo design changes to remain competitive.

The upcoming 5-door Thar will also have modern features such as an infotainment touchscreen system with connectivity, automatic air conditioning, multi-function steering wheel, USB charging port, cruise control, follow me home headlamps, etc. LED headlamps with integrated DRLs will be fitted to the SUV, along with LED tail lamps.

Thar 5-door models will share the same engine options as the 3-door cars, which include 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel. The former produces 152bhp and 320Nm of torque, while the oil burner delivers 132bhp and 320Nm. A 6-speed manual transmission will be available, as well as a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The vehicle is equipped with four-wheel drive as a standard feature. The Mahindra Thar 5-door will receive the more powerful version of these engines.

There is a possibility that the SUV will get a 180mStallion Pro turbo petrol engine, which will be faster and more powerful than the current unit. It is expected that this engine will allow the new Thar to reach 180kmph. Also, the diesel engine can be tweaked to generate up to 160 horsepower.

A maximum water wading capacity of 650mm is provided by this three-door car. Its approach, departure and ramp up angles stand at 42 degrees, 37 degrees and 27 degrees respectively. The SUV is equipped with an independent suspension at the front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear. Mahindra Thar 5-door model might have different approaches, departures, and ramp-up angles since its size will be increased by a significant amount; however, it will continue to offer the same off-road capability as current Thar models. A set of 18-inch tires mounted on the SUV’s off-road wheels measure 255/65 R18.

The 5-door Thar represents Mahindra’s aggressive attempt to crack the family-focused lifestyle segment. And just like the Wrangler, it will be interesting to see if the 5-door Thar will be offered with both a hard and a soft top.
