Talking about the engines, there are two on offer, a petrol and a diesel. The 2.2-litre diesel should be opted by people who have a long-running on a daily basis in order to extract some economy from the engine. Both the 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions are capable enough, but for added comfort, one can opt for the auto. The diesel engine packs a punch and will perform adequately absolutely anywhere and will not feel underpowered at any moment.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine should be taken by people with a small daily run (less than 50 kms) as it will provide the best driving dynamics and will not hamper the economy as well. The same transmission options are offered with the petrol as well and for added comfort, you can opt for the 6-speed auto. This doesn’t mean that the manual transmission is not good enough, the manual is slick shifting and will be a better choice for enthusiasts who will be off-roading with the machine.

Mahindra Thar has a well-built interior and is a huge step up from the outgoing vehicle. The dashboard looks and feels much more modern and the quality of the materials used is improved as well. However, it misses out on some essential features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which are necessary for today’s day and age. Overall, the build quality and the materials used inside are good and the layout of the console is new which looks pleasing to the eyes. Lower variants miss out on a music system which is a bummer considering the price range they sit in. Mahindra could have done a better job in equipping the lower variants of the Thar with a decent kit.

Conclusion

With Mahindra offering so many variants for the Thar, it is pretty difficult to choose the perfect variant to buy. To make the most from your purchase, go for the middle variants to maximize value as they have all the necessary features at a lower price. You can opt for an automatic or manual depending on your taste and buying the hardtop or convertible top is a matter of personal preference as well. All things said the middle variants of the vehicle are the most value for money.
