Mahindra launched its second-generation Thar in India and the auto-giant claims it to be very much better than the previous model this SUV. When we got our hands on the new Mahindra Thar, we found it breathtaking, both in terms of caliber and features.
The all-new Mahindra is built on a new platform and is available in petrol and diesel engine choices. Alongside, the manual transmission, the new Thar is also offered with automatic transmission.

2021 Mahindra Thar Features
The old Mahindra Thar didn’t come equipped various advanced features that we now see in the newly launched model. The Old Mahindra Thar was majorly equipped with only the essential features such as double-din music system, a manual air conditioner, analogue speedometer and tachometer with a small MID.
But, the new Mahindra Thar is now offered with various advanced features compared to its predecessor. It gets front seats adjustable support, roof mounted speakers and power windows. Buyers are also given an option to choose the convertible soft-top trim to enjoy open air driving. The interiors are water-resistant for easy cleaning. It also has safety features like dual front airbags, rear parking sensors, ESP with rollover mitigation, brake locking differentials on all wheels and a mechanical locking differential on the rear axle which enhances the off-roading power. It also offers a roll cage, ISOFIX child seats mounts, hill-descent control and much more.
2021 Mahindra Thar Design
The second-generation Mahindra Thar gets a new six-slat grille flanked. It also gets a new front bumper, raised fenders and 18-inch alloy wheels to give it a sporty stance. In addition, it also gets new front LED DRLs, neatly integrated on the front side of the wheel arches. Likewise, the rear too gets attractive LED brake lights.
The first-generation Mahindra Thar was offered only in company fitted soft-top roof while the new Thar is available in soft-top, hard-top and convertible roof with detachable panels.
2021 Mahindra Thar Specifications
Previous model of Mahindra Thar was offered with 2.5-litre CRDe diesel engine option which produced maximum power of 105 PS and maximum torque of 247 Nm. It was available with a 5-speed manual transmission only.
Now, the new model of Mahindra Thar is offered with two engine options – petrol as well as diesel. The 2.0-litre petrol engine of new Thar generates a maximum power of 150 PS and maximum torque of 320 Nm, while the 2.2-litre diesel engine of this SUV generates peak power of 130 PS and 320 Nm of peak torque. The petrol and diesel engine are built on mStallion and mHawk platform respectively.
We found that the new generation of Mahindra Thar has remarkably improved as compared to its first gen. It now comes with better features, improved safety, striking design and updated specifications that result in powerful performance.
