Read this review of the Mahindra XUV500 and know how good of an offering it is for the consumers.
After being in the Indian market and pioneering the SUV segment with cars like Mahindra Scorpio and Mahindra Bolero, the Indian carmaker got the nerve of the consumers and launched the Mahindra XUV 500 in 2011. The SUV became a huge success strengthening their image even further. This is the facelifted version of the outgoing vehicle and is inspired by the ‘Cheetah’ design language.
Mahindra XUV 500 already has a set of loyal buyers and lovers and has proved that it is a reliable and feature-rich machine. In the current model of XUV500, the rough edges have been refined and the vehicle promises plushness on the inside and stylish looks on the outside. Let’s take a comprehensive look at the SUV and see whether Mahindra has given the vehicle significant changes to capture an even larger customer base or not.
Starting from the front, XUV500 gets a ‘Cheetah’ inspired design language. There are chrome slats on the grille which look typically Mahindra in style. The headlights look sleek and get DRLs along with static bending function. There are chrome surrounds around the headlight and fog light but the housing for the foglamps is finished in gloss black which looks premium to look at. It gets a large hood which enhances the road presence and the car feels imposing.
Talking about the side profile, one can see the dimensions of the vehicle from the sides and get an idea of the sheer size of the SUV. It gets 18-inch diamond cut alloys that look premium and add to the character of the vehicle. There is a strong shoulder line that extends to the rear and the big wheel arches and haunches aid further in increasing the imposing feel of the SUV.
Coming to the rear, there is a change in design for the taillights when compared to the outgoing vehicle. Although the taillights are halogen units, they still look premium. There is a chrome bar right above the license plate which reduces some amount of visual bulk. Overall, the XUV500 has a premium and imposing design that looks handsome and appealing.
Interior and Features
Mahindra has done a great job on the interior front. The vehicle features an all-black interior with tan-brown upholstery which is in line with the premium and plushness factor of this vehicle. There are soft-touch materials used inside the cabin which give a really good feeling once you step inside the cabin. The fit and finish and overall build quality is phenomenal and something which is not expected from Mahindra cars. The front seats on this vehicle are supremely comfortable and are electrically adjustable as well. It has ample kneeroom and under-thigh support and will be a boon to drive on long journeys. The instrument cluster is analogue with a screen but has a quirky design to say the least. It has two analogue dials for the tachometer and speedometer along with a multi-information display.
The features’ list on this vehicle is good and Mahindra has done a great job in equipping it with features that people expect at this price point. Some of the features include automatic climate control, adjustable steering, accessory power outlet, rear AC vents, seat lumbar support, cruise control, smart access card entry, keyless entry, push-button start, sunroof, voice control, leather seats and steering wheel and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with connected car tech. Overall, Mahindra has done a fantastic job in the interior department and made the vehicle feel premium and plush with ample tech on offer.
Ride Quality and Performance
Mahindra XUV500 is offered with a single diesel engine only which is 2.2-litre unit producing 153 bhp and 360 Nm of torque. This is a reliable engine and has more than adequate power, be it on the highway or city. NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) levels are well contained but there is a diesel note which is there as soon as you start the vehicle but it is not bothersome. This engine is supremely capable and will not feel dull even with all three rows full. It is a brilliant highway machine and a comfortable cruiser. The steering is big and feels nice to hold. It is a bit heavy at lower speeds but becomes good as the car picks up speed. There is immense feedback from the steering and it feels direct around corners, exuding confidence.
Talking about the second row of seats, there is ample kneeroom and headroom but due to the high floorboard, the person sits in a knees-up position which translates into the lack of under-thigh support. Considering the width of the car, seating three people abreast would not be a difficult task and there is no transmission hump as well. The third row of seats is strictly reserved for kids as adults won’t be comfortable even for short journeys. Due to the height, there is some amount of body roll and the ride quality is a bit lumpy. It rounds off bumps and potholes with relative ease and provides a plush ride.
The XUV500 is one of the most reliable cars from the Mahindra Group. Some of the safety features include ABS with EBD, child safety locks, six airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, side and front impact beams, engine immobilizer, crash sensor, automatic headlamps, electronic stability control, rollover mitigation, follow me home headlamps, rear camera with parking sensors, hill descent control and hill assist.
