Maruti Alto was a hatchback that was launched at a perfect time in India and it instantly became popular because of the urban looks and limitations with regards to options. The Indian market loved an affordable offering and Maruti Alto was just doing that. It was the car that helped Maruti Suzuki to capture such a massive chunk of the market share. The Alto is their most selling car to this day and the credit goes all the way back to the time when it was launched. The car has been improved majorly since that time and is in line with the modern world. If you are planning to buy the Maruti Alto, you might get confused with so many variants on offer. Stay tuned to find out the right variant for you to buy.

Engine Specifications

Maruti Alto vs Renault Kwid

Variants Engine Transmission Power (bhp) Torque (Nm)
STD 800 cc 5-Speed M 47 69
STD (O) 800 cc 5-Speed M 47 69
LXI 800 cc 5-Speed M 47 69
LXI (O) 800 cc 5-Speed M 47 69
VXI 800 cc 5-Speed M 47 69
VXI Plus 800 cc 5-Speed M 47 69
LXI S-CNG 800 cc 5-Speed M 40 60
LXI (O) S-CNG 800 cc 5-Speed M 40 60

Maruti Alto comes with an 800 cc petrol engine with two different power outputs. The petrol engine produces 47 bhp and 69 Nm of torque which is sufficient considering it is a city car and is not a heavy car. The performance feels adequate and fairly punchy and it is a boon to drive this car in the city. However, using this car for highway duties wouldn’t be a good choice and it should be restricted to city driving only. The CNG option produces 40 bhp and 60 Nm of torque which is not bad either, considering the fuel economy it returns. Its petrol counterpart has great fuel economy figures as well but the increased prices of fuel might make people think twice before purchasing. Both the engines are great for city driving and choosing either of them won’t be the wrong decision.

Price List

Variants Price (ex-showroom)
STD Rs 3.15 Lakhs
STD (O) Rs 3.21 Lakhs
LXI Rs 3.86 Lakhs
LXI (O) Rs 3.92 Lakhs
VXI Rs 4.12 Lakhs
VXI Plus Rs 4.26 Lakhs
LXI S-CNG Rs 4.76 Lakhs
LXI (O) S-CNG Rs 4.82 Lakhs

Maruti Alto being an affordable hatchback has been priced attractively. The price range makes the Alto a value for money car and targets a customer base that no other carmaker can. It is imperative for Maruti to maintain this standard if they want to hold a commanding lead over the rest of its competitors and with prices this low, it surely can achieve that. Therefore, Maruti Alto has been priced in a way that it becomes value for money for the people who buy it.

Safety Features

ISOFIX Child Seat Mounts No No No No No No No No

Maruti Alto does not get any advanced safety features considering the price bracket it sits in. It only gets basic safety features and Maruti has done bifurcation in that as well, which is not a very good thing. The biggest omission are the child safety locks in the lower variants which should have been there and ISOFIX child seat mounts which should’ve been included in the top variants at least. In terms of safety, VXI is the variant to go for as it gets all the important safety features that Maruti has to offer.

Comfort and Convenience Features

Keyless Entry No No No No Yes Yes No No

Maruti Alto does not get many comfort and convenience features because of the price bracket it sits in. However, the amount it gets is sufficient for an entry-level hatchback. But there are some omissions that shouldn’t have been there in the first place, starting with the lack of absolutely everything in the base model. The base variant does not get AC and a heater which is unacceptable in today’s day and age. Maruti should really rectify this and provide people with an offering that is useful to them and not a metal box on four wheels. In terms of comfort and convenience features, VXI is the variant to go for.

Interior and Entertainment

Fabric Upholstery No No Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Touchscreen No No No No 7-inch 7-inch No No
Speakers No No No No 2 2 No No

As you can derive from the table, there is not much on offer when it comes to entertainment inside the cabin. Maruti has equipped the Alto with a touchscreen which is a good thing, however, lower variants do not get fabric upholstery which is a bit too much. These small things go a long way when it comes to purchasing a car and Maruti should rectify this as soon as possible. In terms of interior and entertainment features, VXI is the variant to go for.

Conclusion

Maruti Alto is an affordable entry-level hatchback and targets customers in a price range which no other carmaker does. It is the reason why the hatchback is the best-selling car and people buy it for the value for money factor. The variant to choose is VXI as it gets all the necessary features in every department and the cost of the variant is adequate as well. People planning to buy the Maruti Alto should go for the VXI variant and people looking to buy the CNG kit car, can go for either of the two variants as they have little difference between them.
