Showcased at the Auto Expo 2020, the 3-door SUV is expected to get 5-doors and optional 4×2, 4×4 choice.
Maruti Suzuki’s compact off-roader SUV was again a head-turner at the recently concluded Auto Expo 2020. However, this time, from Maruti’s point of view things look serious unlike its mere ‘showpiece’ displays in the earlier edition of the biennial motor show. There are strong speculations that the launch of Maruti Jimny in India will happen around this year-end (November 2020). Globally, Suzuki Jimny is offered in a 3-door and 4×4 system as standard.
However, India-spec may see a separate 4×2 and 4×4 options along with a 5-door setup. If retailed through Nexa showrooms it will get a sticker price of Rs 10 lakh (approx). Jimny is packed with a 1.5L petrol engine that’s coupled to a 5-speed manual and 4-speed AT choice in the international market.
Some sources suggest that the fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny, the successor to the well-known Maruti Gypsy (discontinued last year), will be a Nexa product, while others claim it to be retailed through Arena dealerships. And both have reasons for their assertions. If Jimny comes with its original global shape i.e. 3.6m in length with 3-door body-on-frame architecture, its home will be Maruti’s premium showroom, while if launched with 5-door, 5-seater or 5+2 seater choice – as a family vehicle – it will sit in company’s regular outlets. Anyways, the picture will be clear in the coming months.
The latest generation Jimny featured at the expo displays the same boxy layout identical to its older generation Jimnys, however, with a modern touch making it appear bold and iconic at the same time. In addition to the rugged bumper line and circular clear headlamps at the front, it comes with a large front glass akin to its earlier models. The sides see big wheel arches and large ORVMs with side blinkers. Moreover, rear has a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, tail light with big reflectors and high mounted roof spoiler.
Inside, Jimny gets an all-black cabin that is furnished with all the basic comfort and amenities. The feature list comprises of a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, auto AC, cruise control, LED headlamps and up to 6 airbags for occupants safety. Some elements that are a part of the standard equipment list of the Jimny global include heated front seats, lane departure warning, and others, which may not feature in the India-spec version.
The displayed Sierra variant (sold overseas) is powered by a 1.5L petrol engine generates 105 PS and 138 Nm of power and torque respectively. The same frugal engine unit performs its duties on the Maruti Ciaz, Maruti Ertiga, Maruti S-Cross and the facelifted Maruti Vitara Brezza in India. Its transmission choices include a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 4-speed torque converter. Further, the standard Jimny with its very compact dimensions comes with small 660cc, 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine giving out 64 PS of maximum power and peak torque value of 95 Nm.
Suzuki Jimny MK4 was launched in 2018 and has been a hot-seller compact SUV with 10 month waiting period in Japan itself. Moreover, in Europe too it’s gaining popularity among the adventure enthusiasts. In Japan, Jimny is presented with two variants – one is the standard version that follows kei car regulations, while the other is the Jimny Sierra (displayed at the Auto Expo).
When launched in India, the true blue off-roader will provide tough competition to the Mahindra Thar and the Force Gurkha Xplorer in its segment.
