S-Presso vs Kwid vs Tiago vs Alto K10

The February month saw sales of more than 9500 Maruti S-Presso unit, which swears for its popularity among Indian audience. On the other hand, Renault Kwid too managed a decent number in the proximity of 4200 units. Moreover, Tiago and the Alto K10 too stood with decent numbers. The element that brings these four commendable hatchbacks under one roof is their tempting price tag that falls in the bracket of under Rs 5 lakh. As a buyer, you may face a dilemma when choosing the best among the fabulous four. So, to make your choice hassle-free, we have put together all the four hatchbacks against each other and compared them on various ‘stand-out’ aspects. Here we go.

Car Models Maruti S-Presso Renault Kwid Tata Tiago Maruti Alto K10
Price range (ex-showroom) Rs 3.70 – Rs 4.99 lakh Rs 2.92 – Rs 5.01 lakh Rs 4.60 – Rs 6.60 lakh Rs 3.60 – Rs 4.39 lakh

In this comparison, the Renault Kwid is the most economical option starting at almost Rs 68,000 lesser than the next affordable car – Maruti Alto K10. The Tata Tiago ranks as the most expensive car as its top-end version costs Rs 1.59 lakh more over the Kwid’s.

On one hand, Kwid and S-Presso can be seen bragging about their SUV-ish stance, while on the other Tiago and Alto K10 fight for the conventional soothing to eye looks. Excluding K10, which has not received any update in the recent past, the Tiago, S-Presso and Kwid flaunt a modern-day appearance and stand-out in terms of overall styling.

The updated Renault car has very distinctive headlamps that sit below the new DRLs and the grille. It continues to be a looker and keeps its butch DNA intact in the recent makeover.

However, the S-Presso gets raised ground clearance but it isn’t proportioned well. The large wheel arches and tall boy design gives it average looks. But cladding in wheel arches would have filled those gaps but that’s missing. A major reason for its disproportionate appearance is its taller height and shorter length (it is mere 10 mm bigger than Alto K10!).

New Tata Tiago gets designing cues from the bigger Altroz hatch. It gets a mature design with pointed nose look and swept-back headlamps. The piano black grille with tri-arrow dash and revised bumper enhance its overall appeal.

The top-spec versions of the Maruti S-Presso and Renault Kwid get 14-inch wheels whereas the Alto K10 gets the smallest 13-inch wheels with wheel covers. The biggest and the only option of alloys come in Tiago which is equipped with 15-inch alloys.

In terms of dimensions, the Tata Tiago beats the competition by being the longest and the widest car. However, the Maruti S-Presso with its SUVish stance is the tallest of the lot. Renault Kwid has the longest wheelbase and highest clearance among the rivals. While rest three cars have higher seating position, the Maruti Alto K10 sits low and it also has the lowest ground clearance here.

The Maruti S-Presso makes up for its average with its cabin. The large glass area and commanding seating position make it the airiest cabin in the competition. Although the instrument setup will take some time getting used to. The fit and finish, quality of materials are better than the Kwid and match that of the Tata Tiago. Rear seats too are comfortable and can seat 6-footers side by side without complaints. The Kwid is more car-like from inside and tall people might have to seat in a slight knee up position. The rear passengers will feel tired in longer journeys. The Kwid’s cabin does look snazzier with brighter elements tastefully used in bits across its interiors.

The Maruti Alto K10 continues with its tried and tested practical interiors. It gets thin seats to liberate more space but offer good under-thigh support. Due to its low seating, ingress and egress require skill. The Tata Tiago comes with the most neatly laid out cabin here. It is conveniently designed with easy access to key features. There are plenty of storage spaces for your knick-knacks inside the cabin.
