Maruti Suzuki has already launched the Jimny Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) in the global car market (the U.K and the Middle East), essentially replacing its four-seater car due to stricter emission norms. Maruti Suzuki is now gearing up to launch the Jimny in India and the preparations for it are in full swing. This news is fueled by the fact that Maruti has been receiving a large number of export units on the Indian shores lately, ahead of the much-anticipated Jimny launch in November this year.
Maruti Suzuki has been very tight-lipped about its marketing plans for the Jimny in India in the past, but in the investor’s call earlier last month, it has announced that evaluations for the Jimny in India are in progress and that they plan on sticking to the schedule for the timely launch. The Executive director, sales and marketing, Maruti Suzuki India– Mr. Shashank Srivastava, had confirmed the launch news on the new SUV in the Indian auto market for the first time.
All We Know So Far
The Jimny in India is expected to be launched with country-specific customizations and upgrades. To carry this out perfectly, Maruti has been actively conducting extensive market research and customer feedback programs. Confirming the rumors, Srivastava was quoted saying, “We started manufacturing the Jimny in India for export markets 2-3 months ago. The export numbers for the made-in-India Jimny are quite good. We showcased the Jimny in India at the Auto Expo 2020 for our Indian customers, and we have collected a lot of feedback. We are still doing research on the Jimny’s pricing in India, or whether there should be India-specific changes in the car, etc.”
The company hasn’t officially decided on a specific launch timeline yet but the tentative timeline is around November 2021. The Jimny will most probably hit the Nexa showrooms with a five-door and a three-door facelift version.
Maruti Suzuki has already showcased the 3-door facelift version at the 2020 Greater Noida Auto Expo to test the waters. It had received positive responses and warm reactions among the attendees and auto-enthusiasts.
As for the powertrain specifications, Maruti Jimny is expected to be fueled by a 1.5-litre K15B Petrol engine. This engine is similar to those fitted in the Vitara Brezza, S-Cross, Ciaz, and Ertiga in the market. It will churn out around 102bhp of power and 138Nm of maximum torque. It’s expected to be coupled with a five-speed manual or a four-speed torque converter automatic transmission option. Its also expected to showcase Maruti’s smart hybrid tech in an improved more dynamic and robust form.
The curb weight of Jimny is expected to be around 1135Kg and in configurations, it has dimensions of 3550 mm in length, 1645 mm in width, and 1730 mm in height. It’s rumored to be laced with comfort features like a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, and automatic climate control features. As for the safety features on the offer, it’s likely to have dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors among others.
As for the price range, the Jimny is expected to have a price tag of Rs.10-12 lakh (ex-showroom. India). As for competitors, Maruti Jimny has no direct rivals as of now but it’s expected to compete for sales with other lifestyle SUVs like the Mahindra Thar and the revamped Force Gurkha.
