Let’s study comprehensively about the MG ZS EV and know how good of an offering it is for electric car buyers.
MG came to India a year ago and introduced their lineup which was pretty attractive and got the attention of the consumers. With the rapidly changing dynamics of the electric vehicle world, MG introduced their electric offering for the Indian market, the MG ZS EV. It is based on the compact SUV, MG ZS and got the attention of the people. Morris Garages seeks to build a prominent name for itself in the Indian car market.
The brand has targeted the hottest segment in India, the SUV segment along with the popular trend towards electric vehicles. It is imperative that MG caters to the needs and wants of the people at large and provides good after-sales services so that they can establish themselves to undercut rivals. Let’s find out how good of an offering the MG ZS EV is for the Indian market.
Starting from the front, the ZS EV has a conventional SUV-like design and shape which is a good thing for the Indian market. The front of the vehicle has a nice grille with the star-like chrome dots along with several character lines which make the nose look handsome. It gets LED DRLs along with a projector setup and a fog light at the lower end of the bumper. The contoured bonnet adds to the character and makes the nose look handsome.
Coming to sides, there is a strong shoulder line that keeps rising until it meets the raked C-pillar. It has good proportions which are visible from the side and the 17-inch windmill inspired design alloys look futuristic and premium. There are big wheel arches and haunches to accentuate the SUV look and complement the overall design.
Talking about the rear, the LED taillights are mounted nice and high and make the car look a bit tall. There is a skid plate on the lower end of the bumper which looks good and is in line with the design. Overall, the character lines and the design language on the ZS EV is modern and sophisticated and is rather unconventional when compared to other EVs.
Interior and Features
MG has done a great job to provide a high-quality cabin in this segment. MG ZS EV features an all-black cabin with silver surrounds and everything is top-notch. The plastics used inside are of good quality along with double-stitched leather on the dashboard. The cabin feels solidly put together and the overall fit and finish is high quality. There are some scratchy bits of plastic lower down but it is expected. The seats on this are large and supportive and it will be a boon to go on long drives on this vehicle. There is good under-thigh and lumbar support making the experience a bit better. The instrument cluster has the conventional design of two analogue dials for the speedometer and tachometer and a multi-information display in the middle.
MG has done a good job in equipping this car with adequate kit so that it is in line with the competition. Some of the features on this car include automatic climate control, accessory power outlet, cruise control, keyless entry, push-button start, voice control, drive modes, PM 2.5 air filter, leather seats and steering wheel, electrically adjustable front seats, heated wing mirror, panoramic sunroof, rain sensing wipers and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Overall, MG has done a fantastic job in equipping the ZS EV with ample features in this segment to undercut the competition and help them to form a solid image and reputation in the Indian car market.
Performance and Ride Quality
Being an electric car, the ZS EV comes with a 44.5kWh battery pack which produces 140 bhp and 350 Nm of torque which are really good figures considering the competition. It has a claimed range of 414 kms on a full charge but it will be lesser in the real world. The performance from this motor is brisk and present right from the moment go. It is a great city car and highway performer and will do all these duties without a hitch. Charging is always a concern with EVs and the MG ZS EV is equipped with 7.4kW charger which can charge from 0-100% in 6-8 hours. The normal 15A power plug will charge the car in 19-18 hours, however, MG provides a 50kW DC fast charger at their dealerships which can charge from 0-80% in an hour.
Coming to the rear seat, there is ample kneeroom and headroom but the seat positioning is quite low, so under-thigh support is lacking. Quality at the rear is good and the panoramic sunroof adds to the ambience, however, it misses out on rear AC vents which would have been a nice touch considering the price of the vehicle. Seating three adults might not be a problem but only good for short journeys. A child and two adults at the rear are optimal. The ZS EV offers supple ride quality and rounds off bumps and potholes relatively well with only the sharpest bumps filtering through to the cabin. The handling is direct and feedback from the steering is positive and confidence-inspiring.
MG has been generous while equipping the ZS EV with safety kit. Some of them are ABS with EBD, brake assist, child safety locks, anti-theft alarm, six airbags, side and front impact beams, tyre pressure monitor, engine immobilizer, crash sensor, automatic headlamps, electronic stability control, follow me home headlamps, rear camera with parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat mounts, hill descent control and hill assist.
