April 2022 saw pretty good numbers in sales for the first time after COVID. Even though the market shares have not reached the pre-COVID levels, some of our Indian car makers are moving towards that with this month’s sales.
Production has been affected in the past 2 years due to the pandemic crisis and the semi-conductor chip shortage. Companies are slowly coming out of the slump and faring better this month better than in the last 2 years.
Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors
Maruti Suzuki stands on the top of the list of best performers of May 2022 with a total of 1,24,474 units sold. Standing behind Maruti Suzuki are Tata Motors, Hyundai and Mahindra. Tata Motors has had 1,754 more units sold in May 2022 than in April of the same year. Meanwhile, Mahindra had a far better record with 4,464 units higher in May 2022 than in April 2022.
Hyundai
Hyundai felt a slight fall in sales from April 2022 with 1,708 units sold lesser in May 2022. But the total of 42,293 units is almost twice the sales Hyundai saw in May 2021. So considering that, it is still a good time for Hyundai in India. Hyundai has also crossed the 50,000 units mark in May.

Wagon R is experiencing a surge in its popularity with the sales growth from the 2,086 units it sold in May of last year. The percentage growth in annual sales has reached a massive 706% for Wagon R.
Close behind the Wagon R is Tata Motors’ Nexon. With 14,641 units sold, Nexon had its best month in sales in May 2022 as this is the highest number sold in any particular month since its launch. YoY growth has gone up 127% for Nexon from last year’s May month sales record.
Next on the list is Maruti Suzuki’s Swift with 14,133 sold units. Swift has risen to the top 10 most sold car in india list again. Sales of Swift have gone up by 102% from last year.
Following these, are Maruti Baleno, Tata Alto, Maruti Ertiga, Maruti Dzire, Hyundai Creta, Maruti Eeco and Maruti Vitara Brezza.
Maruti Suzuki is dominating the Indian car market with its family-friendly, dependable models that continue to impress the buyers. Tata Motors is not very far behind it. With the new models that are being introduced in all segments, Tata Motors is also doing better than ever in sales and performance.
Foreign brands like Kia and MG Motors are steadily gaining the trust and popularity among Indian consumers while others such as Toyota and Hyundai are maintaining their status as well. Toyota and Hyundai especially have fared better post-covid even if they haven’t reached the sales level of Tata and Maruti.
From the table, we can see that hatchbacks are still dominating our market even with the bigger SUVs trending. There are 4 hatchbacks among the top 10 along with 3 SUVs, 2 MPVs and 1 sedan. Wagon R on top of the list itself is a hatchback with the compact SUV Nexon trailing behind it.
Brand-wise, we can see that Maruti Suzuki not only is selling the maximum number of cars but also the most popular models this year. Of the top 10 most sold car in India in May 2022, 7 of them are from the Indo Japanese car maker. Tata’s Nexon and Alto along with Creta from Hyundai make up the rest of the list.
Indian buyers seem to prefer the Indian based carmakers more than the other brands. Still, with a consumer pool as big as ours, there is always space for the other brands to make their mark here.
