Let’s study comprehensively the design, features and various other details of the Renault Duster SUV and know how good of an offering it is for the consumers.
Many car manufacturers established themselves in the Indian car market by launching a capable SUV for the SUV hungry population of India and Renault was one of them. Renault Duster was launched long ago and since then, has been loved by people and has done a massive job in hardening the image and reputation of Renault in India. It had a fresh and urban design back then which appealed to the people.
Renault Duster has been getting constant updates and facelifts so that it is in line with the sands of time. Despite the design and shape being more or less similar, it is still being sold in good numbers. This goes on to show the loyal fans and lovers of this vehicle and the capability it possesses. There are many cars in the competition now and let’s find out whether the Duster still has the pedigree to take them on or not.
The front of the Renault Duster looks fresher and a bit more appealing. It gets LED DRLs with projector headlamps and not to forget, the headlamps are pretty big in terms of size. It has a large horizontally slat chrome grille that looks bold and aggressive. There is a skid plate on the lower end of the bumper and it scooped for a better approach angle while off-roading. There are chrome embellishes surrounding the fog lamps as well.
Coming to the sides, the design is pretty basic and very SUV-like. It gets large haunches around the wheels to accentuate road presence and the 16-inch alloys look really good and complement the rugged appeal of the vehicle. However, the door handles are still the old-school type which looks outdated and should have been changed long ago.
Finally, talking about the rear, the vehicle looks sober and urban. It gets an LED strip in the taillights which add to that modern touch. There is a skid plate on the lower end of the rear bumper as well which is functional and helps in off-roading conditions. Overall, the Renault Duster surely looks urban and purposeful from the outside and will definitely appeal to the people.
Interior and Features
Renault Duster features an all-black interior that looks rather basic and outdated. The materials used inside are not very good and hard plastics are used all over the cabin. Fit and finish levels could have been better at this price point and overall, the interior feels a bit dull and dated. However, there are some chrome and silver surrounds used to enhance the appeal of the cabin. The seats on this car are well cushioned and supportive. There is ample under-thigh support and these seats will hold you in place when off-roading. Also, they will act pretty well on long journeys. It gets a basic instrument cluster with two analogue dials for the speedometer and tachometer and a multi-information display. The interior layout and design could have been better overall.
Renault has done a decent job in equipping the Duster with a kit at this price range. Some of the features in the list include automatic climate control, adjustable steering, height adjustable drivers’ seat, cruise control, keyless entry, push-button start, cooled glove box, voice control, USB charger and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Because of the outdated interior layout, it misses out on some essential features like rear AC vents, a sunroof, ventilated seats and so on. Overall, Renault could have done a much better job in the interior department so that customers feel drawn to the car and have a pleasant experience.
Performance and Ride Quality
Renault Duster is offered with two engine options, a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol which produces 154 bhp and 254 Nm of torque and a 1.5-litre petrol motor producing 104 bhp and 142 Nm of torque. The naturally aspirated engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and the turbo-petrol has the option of a 7-speed CVT. Both the engines feel good to drive and have an adequate punch for city and highway driving with the turbo-petrol having punchier performance. NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) levels are well contained and the motors feel refined to drive.
These engines have enough grunt for heavy as well as occasional off-roading but it is not a hardcore off-roading machine. The feel and feedback from the steering are accurate and optimum. It is light enough to turn at city speeds and weighs up nicely on the highway. Overall, the Duster has good driving dynamics which might put a smile on your face, every time you drive.
Talking about the rear seat, this is another aspect where Renault could have done a lot better. There is just about adequate kneeroom but taller passengers would have a problem, headroom is ample but under-thigh support is lacking. Seating three adults in the backseat is not a problem but they might feel a bit uncomfortable on longer journeys. Lack of rear AC vents might be bothersome in the summers but the good thing is that the headrests at the rear are adjustable. Ride quality on the Duster is good and it rounds off potholes quite and has a flat ride. It rides best with a full load and assures a confidence-inspiring drive.
Renault Duster comes equipped with all the necessary safety features. Some of them include ABS with EBD, brake assist, child safety locks, dual airbags, side and front impact beams, engine immobilizer, crash sensor, reverse camera with parking sensors and impact sensing auto door unlock.

Renault Duster is a machine that has urban looks and good dimensions on the outside which might appeal to the customer. But on the interior front, things are dated and dull and might act as a deal-breaker. The driving dynamics on the vehicle are good and one of the strongest points to buy the vehicle. The Duster has been priced adequately and people considering to buy an SUV should definitely check out the Renault Duster.
