The sub-4m SUV shares underpinnings with the upcoming Nissan Magnite.
Renault has unveiled the concept version of its Kiger SUV in India. As per the company, the production version will feature 80% resemblance to the concept version. Given the flashy looks of the Kiger concept, that is a welcome claim. The Kiger is slated to be launched by early 2021. The French automaker hasn’t revealed the interiors of the SUV.
Following the trend of giving importance to the Indian market with the Kwid and Triber, Renault will be launching the Kiger first in India and then in the other markets of the world.
How is the exterior design of the Renault Kiger showcar?
At the front façade, the design mimics that of the new Kwid. Especially the layout, with sleeker headlamps and stylish bumper. However, sleeker headlamp units get two-level full-LED set up with smart-looking neon indicators. The winged front grille with a large Renault logo in the centre looks contemporary. The sculpted bonnet and neon highlights at the front go well. The pronounced wheel arches and black cladding across the body lend it a butch SUV appeal.
Another interesting element is the side mirrors, which are inspired by aircraft wings and taper at the edges. The side profile gets 19-inch wheels shod with heavily grooved rubber. High ground clearance has become a trademark of new Renault cars, the Kiger too gets a 210mm clearance.
The blackened A, B and C-pillar with contrasting black roof look great. It gets a thick D-pillar. The Renault Kiger appears as a crossover from sides. Moving to the rear, you get double C-shaped tail lamps and spoiler. It also gets a dual exhaust system in the centre.
The showcar had special paint which changes colour based on the lighting and the angle you look at. The shades change from blue to purple and back to blue.
The Kiger will be based on the same CMFA+ platform which underpins the Renault Triber. Despite sharing the platform, the interiors would be completely different from the MPV.
Renault Kiger will be available with two engine options just like its platform-cousin Nissan Magnite. The 1.0-litre naturally aspirated and same capacity turbo petrol engine will be powering the Kiger. While the former will be mated to manual as well as AMT gearboxes, the latter will get manual and CVT options.
Launch date and price
Renault hasn’t confirmed the launch date yet. However, speculations are that the Kiger SUV will be introduced by early next year.
The price of the Renault Kiger is expected to revolve around Rs 5.50 – 9.0 lakh. It will be locking horns in the highly competitive sub-4m SUV segment including Maruti Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra XUV 300 and the upcoming Nissan Magnite.
