Tata Punch vs Tata Nexon – Which SUV to Buy?

The two under 4-meter SUVs from Tata have been in the limelight since their inception in the market. The below comparison will let you make an informed decision before buying.

Tata Punch vs Tata Nexon Comparison

Tata lately launched a new compact cum micro-SUV in the form of Punch, which is the talk of the town for various reasons. The company is even expecting it to become its highest-selling model of all time, with the target of selling over 10,000 units per month, surpassing the currently popular Nexon SUV.

Given its capabilities, the affordable price setting and the current sales number, the Punch, according to Tata, could be the next big thing in the SUV segment, after the Nexon. So, what different Tata has done in this SUV, which is making its sibling Nexon nervous? Let’s talk about both these cars in this comparison.

The big brother Nexon has the upper hand in terms of length, width, wheelbase and ground clearance. However, Tata has smartly designed the Punch to look like a tall-boy hatchback, while the larger boot space than Nexon is something the car can cheer about.

Tata Punch Tata Nexon
Length 3827mm 3993mm
Width 1742mm 1811mm
Height 1615mm 1606mm
Wheelbase 2445mm 2498mm
Boot Space 366L 350L
Ground Clearance 187mm 209mm

The Punch has been conceived from the ground to be an SUV. So, it shares strong family ties with other cars like Harrier and Safari with the flat bonnet, split headlamp layout with projector headlamp cluster and LED DRLs running atop. The glossy black grille with a tri-arrow-shaped, larger air dam, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, and rounded tail lamps with Y-shaped tri-arrow LED elements, further highlights the aggressive stance.

Nexon is also a stylish and muscular-looking SUV with a sleek black grille, elegant twin-pod LED headlamps with LED DRLs and a fog lamp housing with c-shaped surrounds at the front. The aerodynamic side profile is highlighted by 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, while the rear end complements the overall design with tri-arrow led tail lamps.

Interiors and Features

The Punch’s interiors come with a dual-tone theme with a premium-looking dashboard making the cabin look as cool as exteriors. The interiors are spacious in every sense, with the rich-looking tri-arrow designed upholstery and leather-wrapped steering & gear knob giving it a royal look.

In the features department, Punch is nothing short of modern amenities as it is equipped with a part-digital instrument cluster, a 7-inch Harman touchscreen infotainment unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and steering mounted controls. Then there is electrically adjustable ORVMs, automatic climate control, auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, fast USB charging, glove box cooling and iRA connected car technology for more convenience.

The Nexon’s cabin is intuitively designed, with three-tone finishing and premium looking dashboard with tri-arrow decoration. The car gets the same leather treatment on the steering wheel and the gear knob as Punch. In terms of comfort, the Nexon gets all the features of Punch, with the added convenience of a fully digital instrument cluster, 8-speakers Harman sound system, electric sunroof, rear ac vents, front centre armrest, 60:40 rear seat split, and functional roof rails.

Tata Punch has been crafted on the same ALFA platform as sibling Altroz, while Nexon is built on the X1 platform, so they score high on safety. Both the cars get dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX, cruise control, rear washer & wiper, rear defogger, and reverse parking sensors with camera. Tata Punch also gets special brake sway control that recognises the tendency of instability during abrupt braking.

On the other hand, Tata Nexon gets an extra dose of a safety cover with electric stability program, roll-over mitigation, electric traction control, hydraulic brake assist, hill-hold control, electric brake pre-fill and tyre pressure monitoring system.

Both the cars have been bestowed with a 5-star NCAP safety rating.

Engine Specs

The engine specs are the most decisive section of any car buyer, and Tata Nexon is clearly on the value side of the comparison in terms of power, torque and transmission system.

Tata Punch Tata Nexon
Engine 1.2L petrol 1.0L petrol
Power 86PS 120PS
Torque 113Nm 170Nm
Transmission 5-speedMT/5-speed AMT 6-speedMT, 6-speed AMT

Pricing and Verdict

Tata Punch has been priced in the range of Rs. 5.64 – 8.98 Lakh, while the Tata Nexon will cost between Rs 7.28 – 13.23 Lakh (ex-showroom). Pricing does play an important role when we compare both these cars and that is why Tata Nexon shines in every department, be it styling, features, safety or power.

However, if your budget is strictly between 6-10 lakhs and you want a feature-loaded compact SUV with top-notch safety, Tata Punch is not a bad deal at all.
