Toyota’s current-generation Yaris has been around in the global markets since 2013, even though it was introduced in India in 2018. A new model from Toyota will debut in Thailand in August next year, one of the company’s largest markets.
Three generations have passed since the current-gen Yaris debuted in 2013. India sells the facelifted version released in 2016. In 2018, Toyota gave it another mild styling update in few markets. In some markets, the new model is sold as the Toyota Vios. In addition to getting the brand-new interior and exterior design elements, the car will be based on the same modular platform that’s used on the Raize SUV and Rocky from Daihatsu. This platform underpinned Daihatsu’s concept sedan that was displayed in 2017 in Indonesia as the Daihatsu DN-F sedan.
Internally, the car is known as D92A and the letter D in the code suggests that Daihatsu will underpin this new model on its platform currently used in newer models aimed at emerging markets. Toyota produces many different models of cars and SUVs on its TNGA modular platform, including the DNGA platform (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture). The next-generation Yaris will benefit from weight savings, rigidity, and enhanced safety due to the new platform.
Yaris’ engine and powertrain have not been detailed, but we anticipate the model will use the 1.5-litre petrol engine and the 1.0-litre gasoline engine found in Toyota Raize SUV. The next-generation Yaris could benefit from hybrid technology when it comes to SUVs soon.
Are there any plans to bring it to India?
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, a rebadged Yaris, is likely to replace the current model in India soon. The next-generation car is not expected to hit Indian roads any time soon.
