6 Underrated Cars in India You Can Bargain On This Valentine’s Day and Holi

Every year, the car buying sentiment in India is at an all-time high during the festive season between September to November, around Valentine’s Day and Holi. Carmakers try hard to attract the car buying audience to cash on during these occasions in India. However, the ongoing global shortage of semiconductor chips and the immense popularity of some cars has brought in a big demand-supply problem in the Indian car market.

There are some underrated cars which can be readily available, and that also with some of the best offers. Following is a list of six such potent cars which are low sellers but might get a push during Valentine’s Day and Holi with lucrative offers, making them great bargains for their price:

  1. Maruti Suzuki S-Cross

The first-ever offering from Maruti Suzuki’s NEXA channel of premium cars, the S-Cross was never a best-seller product, even though it remains one of the most practical cars money can buy. During the transition to BS6 norms, the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross ditched its 1.3-litre diesel engine for a 1.5-litre petrol engine from its stablemates like Ciaz, Ertiga, XL6 and Vitara Brezza.

The low slung crossover styling of the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross might not have clicked much with the Indian audience, it’s an indeed practical vehicle. It has a great sense of space, decent features, an economical and reliable engine and low maintenance costs. The S-Cross is expected to get one of the heaviest discounts around Valentine’s Day and Holi, given that it is priced equally to some of the best-sellers sub-four-meter SUVs like Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon and Hyundai Venue.

  1. Maruti Suzuki Ignis

Maruti Ignis

Another offering from NEXA by Maruti Suzuki, which has suffered much with its polarized appearance, is the compact hatchback Ignis. While the raised stance and compact dimensions do make the Maruti Suzuki Ignis a perfect solution for urban roads, the polarized opinions it draws for its rear design has been a big speed-breaker in its path to success.

While the Ignis is a decent seller in its price segment, it is nowhere close to what Maruti Suzuki had expected. The Ignis has always been available with healthy discounts that have kept it afloat in the market. So, it is no surprise that it will be offered with attractive discounts for the festive season as well. The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is available with a tried-and-tested 1.2-litre petrol engine, which is available with both 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT gearbox options.

  1. Renault Duster

What started as a big revolution in the compact SUV segment, the Renault Duster has begun to fade into oblivion with the arrival of much newer and fresher looking competitors. The Duster is the oldest in the premium compact SUV category, with few changes to its exterior and dated looking cabin that make it an old-school proposition. However, it continues to be one of the finest SUVs to drive with a well-sorted chassis and potent engine options.

While other offerings from Renault are matching the expectations on sales parameters, the Duster continues to be a slow seller. So, to give it a big push, the Renault Duster will be available with lucrative offers to watch out for. The Renault SUV can be had either with 1.5-litre petrol or a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard with both the engine options, with the turbo-petrol engine also getting an optional CVT gearbox.

  1. Nissan Kicks

Like the current Duster, its distant cousin based on the same platform, Nissan Kicks has also failed to impress the Indian audience, despite being a well-executed global product suited for Indian conditions. However, the impressive comeback which Nissan has made with the Magnite might work for the Kicks as well. And this is why Nissan might offer some attractive discounts on the Kicks to divert some of the attention which the Magnite is receiving.

The Nissan Kicks is built on the same B0 platform as the Renault Duster, which is the reason behind its fantastic ride quality and driving dynamics. Even the powertrain options of Nissan Kicks – 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol – have been shared with the Duster.

  1. Mahindra Marazzo

Mahindra Marazzo

Call it the lack of marketing from its parent maker or a stroke of bad luck, the Mahindra Marazzo doesn’t deserve to be a slow seller as what it is right now. The Mahindra Marazzo was launched for those who wanted a bit more than the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga but found the Toyota Innova Crysta a far too stretch for their budget. The Marazzo had a strong start in the Indian market, which somehow fizzled out with time.

The Marazzo is one of the plushest MPVs around, with an eye-pleasing design, well-appointed and equipped cabin and a punchy 1.5-litre diesel engine. For its price, the Mahindra Marazzo is already a very good bargain. However, one can benefit from the additional offers which Mahindra might roll out for the Marazzo around Holi to keep it relevant in the Indian car market. Also around Valentine’s Day, if you wish to gift it to your better half, try bargaining at the showrooms during purchase of this MPV.

  1. Volkswagen Vento

Volkswagen Vento

While the Skoda Rapid has been a very popular model and the backbone of Skoda India in terms of sales, its platform-sharing sibling Volkswagen Vento hasn’t been as lucky. Save for some very minute changes to its design and equipment, nothing much has changed in this sedan in a decade of its existence.

The new 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, combined with the well-sorted chassis, make the Volkswagen Vento one of the finest sedans to drive in the market right now. Given its limited equipment level and dated styling, the Volkswagen Vento is a pricey sedan for what it offers. However, some bargaining at the dealership may result in a sweeter deal.
