At the Munich motor show, Volkswagen revealed the ID Life concept, the company’s compact urban crossover previewing the entry-level overseas electric car by 2025. Volkswagen’s new machine is the company’s first building based on the MEB Entry platform used by Cupra and Seat.
In order to accommodate its urban crossover brief, the ID Life utilizes an adaptation of the MEB platform with a shorter, 2,650mm wheelbase. While the ID 3 and ID 4 are rear-wheel-drive, the ID Life’s motor is located in the front and produces 231 horsepower; VW claims the ID Life can go from 0 to 100 km/h in fewer than seven seconds.
The machine shows familiar design cues from ID, although it has a boxier, more crossover-oriented appearance than previously. This concept includes a detachable roof and can be clad in GTI tartan among other materials.
Many of the controls on the minimalist interior can be found on the steering wheel, while the displays can be viewed using a head-up display. Volkswagen claims that its infotainment system can be operated using a smartphone, offering “a completely new level of integration”. Mobile devices can be magnetically fixed to the dashboard. Volkswagen’s concept also uses recycled materials extensively, such as recycled seat fabric, as part of its commitment to sustainability.
Volkswagen created the concept with the help of a dedicated team. Ralf Brandstatter, company boss, said it’s more than a show car. Brandstatter continued, “In the future, people will want more. They are always looking for new experiences and the ID Life is making that possible. This car is prepared to provide extraordinary experiences both online and offline. It will be a companion for life and living space for you. MEB’s (Modular electric drive matrix) ID Life demonstrates its uniqueness. MEB’s scalability is unparalleled in the industry, and we have just begun to scratch the surface of what MEB can do. This platform can raise the scale to the heavens. We will be driving them by 2025 and can break the €20,000 barrier.”
The first Volkswagen EV for the Indian market, the ID 4 SUV, is expected to debut in 2022. On September 23, 2021, VW will introduce the petrol-powered Taigun SUV, a model that is one of its most important for the market.
