Let’s take a deep dive and know about the design, features and other key details of the Volkswagen Polo.
Volkswagen group has been around for quite a few years in India and have been delivering quality products. The reason for their unpopularity was the premium price tag and people failing to understand what the vehicle actually offers because they were simply unaware at that time. Indian consumers started realizing important needs related to a car and the Volkswagen Polo was launched.
People were now looking for a vehicle with superior build quality, safety and features in a well-priced package. Volkswagen Polo was aimed to do just that and became instantly popular, mainly among the youth. It is high time that the VW Group introduce a complete revamp of the existing Polo and launch the newer version of the vehicle available globally. Let’s discuss the characteristics of this in detail and find out how good it is.
Starting from the front, it has a sporty design and compact dimensions. The headlights are halogens and that is a big miss, considering all other rivals offer something or the other. There is a slim chrome line that visually connects the headlamps and gives that plush look to it. The bonnet is contoured and slightly tapered towards the front and there are cuts and creases on the lower end of the bumper which enhance the sportiness of the vehicle.
Coming to the sides, it has a simple and neat design with not much going on. It gets 16-inch gun metal-coloured alloys which enhance the look of the car and complement the overall design language. There is a subtle shoulder line running all the way to the rear of the car and it gets heat-insulated windows as well. The side profile portrays the compact dimensions of this car.
Last but not the least, the rear is similar to the whole design language. It is very simplistic in nature with no exciting elements as such. The taillights look smart but are normal halogen units and there are no stylish cuts and creases to enhance the look. It gets faux diffuser treatment at the lower end of the bumper to give it a sporty stance. Overall, the design of the Polo is a mixture of sporty and simple elements.
Interior and Features
The Volkswagen Polo features an all-black interior to increase the sporty appeal of the car and complement the exterior design. There are hard plastics used everywhere inside the cabin but the quality of the materials and the fit-finish levels are top-notch. There are no panel gaps of any sort and everything feels solid and secure. The seats on this car are top-notch as well and offer ample support and cushion. There is good under-thigh support for taller passengers as well and will go a long way in aiding comfort on longer journeys. The instrument cluster consists of two analogue dials for the speedometer and tachometer and a multi-information display in the middle. However, the interior feels dated but the materials used are of exquisite quality.
VW Group has made sure to equip the Polo with ample tech and features to make the interior experience as pleasant as possible. The list includes adjustable steering, adjustable seats, automatic climate control, accessory power outlet, remote trunk opener, rear AC vents, keyless entry, cooled glovebox, voice control, leather steering wheel and gear shift lever, 6.5-inch infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Overall, the Polo is a well-packaged vehicle that gets top quality materials and features that help in enhancing the interior experience of the car.
Performance and Ride Quality
Volkswagen Polo comes with two petrol engine options. The first one is 1.0-litre TSI petrol motor which produces 108 bhp and 175 Nm of torque and the second one is a 1.0-litre MPI petrol motor which is good for making 75 bhp and 95 Nm of torque. Turbo petrol motor is the one to choose as it will offer the best value and driving pleasure. It has supreme driving dynamics and is a fun to drive car which can be used for city driving as well as occasional highway duties. The naturally aspirated motor feels underpowered when compared with the turbo petrol motor and is only good for doing city tasks. The steering feels nice to hold and is direct and sharp. It is a fun car to throw around corners as the feedback from the steering is immense and exudes confidence on triple-digit speeds.
Coming to the rear seat, there is not much space when compared to the rivals in the segment. Due to its compact dimensions, there is just about adequate kneeroom and headroom but under-thigh support is poor. Taller passengers, in general, might have a hard time in sitting at the rear. There is a bit of a transmission hump and it is best suited for two adults and a kid, because the width of the car does not permit for three adults to sit at the rear in comfort. The ride quality of the Polo is planted and a bit on the stiffer side. It does a great job in rounding off bumps but the sharp ones might filter through to the cabin. Overall, the ride of the Polo is flat and planted and rides like a mature car.
Volkswagen Polo feels solidly built and here is where the German goodwill comes into play. The safety list includes ABS with EBD, child safety locks, dual airbags, cruise control, side and front impact beams, vehicle stability control system, crash sensor, engine immobilizer, automatic headlamps, electronic stability control, anti-theft device, anti-pinch power windows, ISOFIX child seat mounts and hill assist.
